Toenail fungus lasers can temporarily improve clear-nail appearance, but the clinic studies measured different outcomes from the “cure” many people have in mind. If you are weighing a laser, home light device, price, or refund, the key is to separate a clearer-looking nail from mycological cure (negative microscopy and culture) and complete cure (complete mycologic and clinical cure).

What did clinic laser studies find?
Published research on nail lasers has focused on clinic lasers, not the home products below. A 2022 laser review explains that complete cure means both mycological and clinical cure, while mycological cure means negative microscopy and culture. In the randomized trials it reviewed, the one patient-level result using both tests reported a 0% mycological cure rate. Reported combined clinical cure rates were 13.0% to 16.7% for short-pulsed lasers and 25.9% for long-pulsed lasers. No included study reported a complete-cure rate.
A 2019 systematic review and a second prospective-trials meta-analysis address laser treatment as well. A separate randomized, quadruple-blind, sham-controlled trial, LASER-1, studied people with diabetes at risk for foot ulcers. These studies do not establish that a clinic laser, or a home light device, removes fungus from every nail.
What does FDA “temporary increase of clear nail” mean?
The FDA’s record for the LunulaLaser classifies it as a laser for “temporary increase of clear nail” in people with onychomycosis; the record lists product code PDZ and a substantially-equivalent 510(k) decision. That is an appearance-focused device category, not a finding of complete cure. The FDA’s 510(k) program describes 510(k) as its premarket-notification pathway for devices; 510(k) clearance is not FDA approval.
In a clinic session, WebMD says a laser heats nail layers and is intended to target fungal genetic material. The WebMD laser overview says sessions take about 30 minutes, often require at least two appointments five to six weeks apart, and are not covered by insurance.
Why home LED devices are different from clinic lasers
A clinic laser is the type used in the published trials. Home listings may describe LEDs, red or blue light, infrared light, a topical pen, or a spray; those formats are not the same thing as a clinic laser protocol. That is why a product’s label, stated wavelength, timer, package terms, and return terms are the practical things to check before you order.
If you prefer a topical route, the nail fungus cream guide covers that separate option.
How long does a toenail take to grow out?
A clearer area has to grow forward with the nail. WebMD says a toenail can take 12 to 18 months to grow out. The Cleveland Clinic nail fungus guide notes that nail fungus can affect a toenail’s color, shape, and texture, which is why it helps to track a new clear area at the base rather than judge progress from one week to the next.

Does laser treatment hurt, and when should you get care first?
Clinic lasers and home light devices are not interchangeable, so follow the product’s own instructions rather than applying a clinic schedule at home. A dark, thick, or crumbling nail can have more than one cause: MedlinePlus nail abnormalities notes that infection, injury, medicines, and other conditions can change nail color, texture, or thickness.
If symptoms are severe or painful, or a toenail turns brown or black, Scripps guidance says to see a primary care doctor or podiatrist instead of self-treating. The same route makes sense before changing a medication plan.
Before you buy a home nail light
- Read the supplement facts panel or product label where one is provided, along with the stated dose or session timer.
- Check whether the listing describes a laser, LED or other light format.
- Confirm today’s price, shipping charge, package option, refund route, and any recurring charge before checkout.
- Track a clear area growing from the base of the nail, remembering that full toenail growth takes months.
- For painful symptoms or a brown or black nail, arrange the care-first route above.
